Congressman Joe Wilson returned yesterday from a U.S. congressional delegation trip to Afghanistan.
Monday, we visited in Khabul with General Petraeus, we also visited with troops–I did–from South Carolina, which is always a highlight. Then on Tuesday, again I visited with troops from South Carolina. And we also went on a “windshield tour” by Humvee in Kandahar City.
“This was no junket,” says Wilson, as has been charged by Democrat Rob Miller, Wilson’s opponent in the upcoming general election. Miller issued a press release criticizing Wilson for taking a “taxpayer funded junket” to the country.
” When you arrive and you put on body armor, this is not the definition of a junket,” says Wilson.
According to his interview in Hilton Head’s Island Packet newspaper, Wilson through the streets Kandahar just hours after the Taliban tried to attack a NATO airfield.
This is the congressman’s tenth trip to the war zone in Afghanistan. He has also traveled to Iraq to visit troops as a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees.
Wilson says that after meeting with new war commander, General David Petraeus, he is more dedicated to supporting the attempt to eliminate the Taliban there. He also discussed other events of his “whirlwind tour” of the region:
