Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson called Democrat Rob Miller’s attack on Wilson’s travel record “sad” and “desparate.”

Miller has been running television ads about Wilson’s travel, which has totaled more than $100,000 over the past few years and has gotten the attention of a congressional committee looking into Wilson’s per diem spending.

Wilson, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, defends the travel. Wilson points out that most of his travel has been to Iraq and Afghanistan to get a ground-level view of the military operations there and the well-being of U.S. troops. Still, Miller characterizes some of Wilson’s trips as junkets.

“When you need to wear body armor and you are directed to a bomb shelter, it is not a junket,” Wilson says in the ad.

Voters will get to go to the polls Nov. 2 to choose between Wilson and Miller in what has been the most expensive congressional race in S.C. history. Both sides have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in ads so far.

“My opponent and (U.S. House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi are desperate,” Wilson says in the ad.
